Keywords: education, eye practices, youtube

Aim:

Evaluating the education quality of youtube videos that give information about eye practices can be applied by family physicians in polyclinic conditions.

Method:

This is a retrospective, cross-sectional, register-based study. A search of YouTube was performed for the terms "corneal foreign body removal", "conjonctival foreign body removal", "lacrimal drainage system syringing", "eye drop instillation", "eye ointment instillation", "eye irrigation" without any changes to the Web site's standard search preferences. Respectivelly, first 50, 15, 12, 62, 18, 13 videos were evaluated for terms. Number of total views, daily views, comments, likes, dislikes are noted. A total of 169 videos were evaluated by two opthalmologist in different times regarding DISCERN score (min-max: 16-75), Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) score (min-max: 0-4), and Global Quality score (min-max: 0-5). The average values of two opthalmologists for 3 scoring systems were noted.

Results:

The correlation between the scores of DISCERN, JAMA and Global Quality given by both users was significantly consistent (r=0,335 p=0,038; r=0,798 p=0,043; r=0,688 p=0,044 respectively). The mean DISCERN, JAMA and Global Quality scores were 32.63 ± 7.25 (poor quality), 0.83 ± 0.58 (lowest quality), and 2.0 ± 0.97 (poor quality), respectively. Of the 169 videos, 71 (42%) had been uploaded by physicians, 40 (23.7%) by non-physician health workers, 58 (34.3%) by another youtube users. While all mean DISCERN, JAMA and Global Quality scores of the videos uploaded by physicians were significantly higher than both non-physician health workers and another users (p<0,05, p<0,05); there were no statistically significant difference between non-physician health workers and another users (p>0.05).

Conclusions:

Although; youtube videos uploaded by doctors about eye practices are relatively better than other users, the total quality of the videos is low in terms of education. For this reason; youtube is not an appropriate platform to educate physicians about eye practices.
