The Prevalance of Usage of Food Suplements and Healthy Diet Behaviours Among Patiets of Ondokuz Mayıs University Family Medicine

Aim:

To determine the frequency of use of food supplements, distribution according to sociodemographic characteristics, reasons for use and healthy eating behaviours in individuals aged 18 and over who applied to the Ondokuz Mayıs University Family Medicine outpatient clinic.

Method:

1167 participants were who meet the study criteria was applied to the study. The sociodemographic characteristics, chronic diseases, food supplements they used, and healthy eating behaviors of the individuals participating in the study were determined by a questionnaire consisting of 40 questions prepared by the researchers.

Results:

% 65 of the participants were women.. % 9.5 of the participants are obese (BMI>30 kg/m2) and % 47 of the individuals did not do regular physical activity.. % 42.7 of individuals had used food supplements in the last 12 months. The common food supplements used by the participants were Vitamin D (% 60.2), Vit.B12 (% 34.3), multivitamins (% 33.7), green tea (% 24.1), iron (% 22.3), and probiotic (% 20.5). It was determined that % 5.4 of the individuals in the study used herbal supplements. The frequency of using ginseng and protein powder / bar was higher in men than women. The frequency of using iron, vitamin B12 and green tea was higher in women than men (p<0,001). The participants over age of 50 uses herbal products more commonly. The participants prefer to obtain their supplements pharmacies (% 87.3) and the internet (% 25,3) most. Most common reasons for people to use food supplements were determined as strengthening the immune system, iron or vitamin deficiencies, protecting their health and protection from diseases, feeling more energetic, bone health and osteoporosis.

Conclusions:

Food supplement use of the participants was found to be high in our study population.
