Keywords: hypertension, primary care, type 2 Diabetes

Aim:

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of hypertension in patients with Type 2 Diabetes and their control rates in a Family Healthcare Center in Samsun.

Method:

Atakum Family Healthcare Center has six family physicians with 20,830 registered patients. A sample size was calculated using TURDEP 2 trial data among patients 20 years of age and older. A total of 323 patients with type 2 Diabetes were included in the study. Blood pressure of the patients was measured according to Hypertension National Consensus Report 2019.

Results:

46.4% (n=150) of the patients were men and 53.6% (n=173) were women. The mean age of the patients was 61.9±9.8 (Min: 25, max: 85) years , mean diabetic age was 9.8±7.4 (Min: 1, max: 43) years. 209 patients (64,7%) reported established hypertension. Mean systolic blood pressure was 141.8±21.2 (Min: 90, max: 223) mm Hg and mean diastolic blood pressure was 80.3±11.9 (Min: 45, max: 150) mm Hg. 55 (17%) patients were newly diagnosed with hypertension. In total 264 (81%) patients were hypertensive. Anti-hypertensive drugs were previously prescribed for all patients who reported a diagnosis of hypertension. ARBs were the most frequent anti-hypertensive drug used as mono-therapy or in-combination. ARB+Diuretic combination was the most common therapy choice used in 51 (24,4%) patients. Only 160 patients (49,5%) of the study population were normotensive.

Conclusions:

Hypertension was reported as the most common comorbidity in type 2 Diabetes patients. The high number of patients newly diagnosed and low hypertension control rates in patients with an established diagnosis of hypertension shown in this study revealed the importance of close follow-up of these patients in primary care.
