Intimate Partner –Sexual Violence and Relationship Between Depression Symptoms Among Collage Women a Sample From a University

Aim:

The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence of sexual violence among college women of Ankara University. The depression symptoms of the respondents were compared with the history of their sexual abuse in the past and in six months.

Method:

The screening model, a questionnaire consisting of three scales ( Intimate Partner Violence – Victim Version and Personal Health Questionnaire-9) were used. All scales were valid and reliable in the Turkish language.

Results:

Forty hundred healthy college women, who were students in Ankara University and accepted to participate were included in the study. Of the participants,97.3% were single (n = 389) and average age was 20.70 ± 2.12. The average year of attendance to the college was %30.8 of them were in her third year. Most of the individuals were grown up in towns by the range of % 81.8 (n=327). The rate of sexual violence among college women is %17. The prevalence of sexual violence in six months is 9% (n=36). It is compared that the mother of college women has a job and the college women have more risk of being sexually violent ( p=0.005 ). It is found that the romantic relationship time that college woman was involved in is a risk factor for sexual violence ( p=0,122 ). The results of logistics regression are being a witness to domestic violence, alcohol abuse, substance abuse are risk factors that affect sexual violence. Depression is another issue that is found high among college women who were sexually abused.

Conclusions:

It was demonstrated that there was a positive correlation between sexual violence among college women and depression. It should also be emphasized how childhood histories are important. In addition, college women should be aware of being sexually abused while dating men.
