Aim:

Diabetes, has become troubling to a great extent society health with increase in incidence and reaching epidemic proportions, in Turkiye, like the whole world. We aimed to evaluate the type 2 diabetes risk of registered population in Hurriyet Educational Family Health Center, managed by Prof. Dr. Cemil Tascioglu City Hospital, formerly known Okmeydani Research Hospital.

Method:

Sampling was made stratified using age to define sample size more accurately. Ethical committee approval is taken. FINDRISK Type 2 diabetes risk questionnaire was applied to patients who agreed to participate in the study.Sociodemografic data, brief medical history, anthropometric measures, blood pressure values and some past test results were recorded.

Results:

Patients count was in total 210, 139(66,2%) female, 71,4% of them were under age 50 years. Average age was 41.75±15.1 years. The most frequent chronic disease was hypertension. 78% of patients were overweight or obese. National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel-III and International Diabetes Federation metabolic syndrome criteria concluded 32,9% and 31,9% of patients to be diagnosed, respectively. Highest rate of metabolic syndrome was in 50 years and older. FINDRISK score average was 9,96±5,24 points and in slightly elevated risk group. 64,3% of patients were in low and slightly elevated risk group. 14,3% of them were high risk, 3,6% of them were very high risk group patients. In woman gender, by increase in age, in married patients, in patients who has any chronical disease or low educational status or currently unemployed patients, FINDRISK risk score results were more in high and very high risk group.

Conclusions:

We evaluated and defined the risk of diabetes in individuals without diabetes, according to their different sociodemographic and clinical status. Family physicians should scan patients with FINDRISK questionnaire to evaluate patients more clinically based. That would be a step of great importance to cope with diabetes.
