More Tech, More Touch in Contemporary Family Medicine

Aim:

In 1999, John Naisbitt proposed the "high tech, high touch" principle: as technology advances, the human need for personal contact grows correspondingly. This resonates in contemporary family medicine, where physicians spend nearly twice as much time on electronic health record tasks as on direct patient interaction, and administrative burden drives professional burnout.

Method:

In cardiovascular care, where continuity, shared decision-making, and longitudinal risk management are central, this burden threatens the therapeutic relationship that defines family medicine.

Results:

Emerging artificial intelligence (AI) tools can restore this balance. A multicenter study of 263 clinicians found that ambient AI scribes reduced burnout, improved undivided attention to patients, and decreased after-hours documentation. The first randomized trial of ambient AI scribes confirmed a 9.5% reduction in documentation time and improved burnout scores, while a pilot implementation showed significant reductions in task load and work exhaustion. Beyond administrative relief, AI is enhancing cardiovascular care. AI-enabled ECG screening has increased detection of asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction in primary care, and AI-based clinical decision support systems are improving risk assessment and disease management. Machine learning models have outperformed traditional cardiovascular risk calculators, transforming how family physicians screen for and manage cardiovascular disease. AI also shows promise in communication: generative AI–drafted replies provide empathy-infused starting points for physician responses, reducing cognitive burden while preserving the human voice.

Conclusions:

The evidence supports a paradigm where technology reinforces the human core of family medicine. In cardiovascular health, where continuous interaction between the family physician and the patient is extremely important, AI tools that reduce administrative burden and improve clinical decision-making processes can support the therapeutic relationship between patient and doctor. As technology is consciously integrated into our lives, more technology can enable more interaction.
